2 Natural Ingredients You Can Use To Reduce And Eliminate Your Pain

Posted on: 20 June 2017

When you are dealing with any type of pain, including chronic pain, there are many over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers you can take. You may also choose to use more natural remedies, such as acupuncture, massages, and natural herbal ingredients to relieve your pain. Here is information and instructions to use two natural ingredients of turmeric and white willow bark to treat your pain.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice you may be familiar with for seasoning Asian and Middle-eastern dishes, but you may not realize it is helpful for reducing pain and inflammation. Curcumin is the compound within the turmeric root responsible for reducing pain and inflammation within your body when you take it internally. In fact, a recent study found that patients who took curcumin from the turmeric root had pain reduction in their arthritis just as well as when they took ibuprofen for pain treatment.

You can find ground turmeric in most local grocery stores in the spice section, or you may also find it in some Asian grocery stores in its natural form as a whole root. It looks similar to the ginger root, but its interior coloring is bright orange.

You can use the spice to season many of your dishes to help with pain management and reduction. If you choose to take the cumin with food, be sure to pair the spice with black pepper, as your body poorly absorbs curcumin without it. It has been found that taking turmeric with black pepper, which contains piperine, increases your body's absorption of the curcumin by up to 2000 percent. You can add a couple teaspoons of ground turmeric and a sprinkling of black pepper into a morning smoothie to help pain.

You can also take turmeric as a supplement, which you can find at most health food stores, taking it in a daily dose of anywhere from 100 to 500 milligrams. Make sure the supplement you take contains piperine for help with absorption. Some supplements may contain bioperine, which works just as piperine does to aid with absorption. If you want to take more than 500 milligrams each day, you can take up to 10 grams every day. Keep in mind it is safe but can cause gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

White Willow Bark

Another natural way to help manage and control your pain is with the use of white willow bark. This bark from the white willow tree contains anti-inflammatory compounds, including salicin along with polyphenols and flavonoids, which are what researchers think is responsible for the pain relief and anti-inflammation this plant brings. Salicin is a chemical similar to aspirin, and when you take the compound, it brings pain relief slightly slower than aspirin, but its effects can last much longer. You can take white willow bark for pain and inflammation as a brewed tea, in a capsule containing the dried herb alone or as a combination with other herbs, or as a tincture.

To make your own tea, get some white willow bark chips from a local herbal store or online and use two teaspoons of bark for every eight ounces of water. To get appropriate pain relief, you can drink up to three or four eight-ounce cups of the tea each day. Make all this in one brewing by adding eight teaspoons of white willow bark into 32 ounces of water.

Bring the water to a boil and let it continue to boil for five to ten minutes. Turn the heat off on the tea and let it sit and steep for 20 to 30 minutes. Strain out the bark with a wire mesh strainer and discard the bark. To help improve the taste of your tea, you can add a cinnamon stick into the tea while it boils and steeps. You can also add honey for sweetness.
